What Will This Sod Cost?

Sod is cheap; laying it is not. Material runs well under a dollar a square foot, but a full installed job — grading, prep, and laying — is often two to three times that. Here's both, for the area calculated above.

Sod is perishable — it should go down the day it's delivered, within 24 hours at the outside. Plan the labor before you order.

National ranges for planning. Grass type matters — Bermuda and fescue sit at the low end, zoysia and St. Augustine at the high end.

How to Calculate Sod

Sod is ordered in square feet, delivered as rolls on pallets — and it's cut fresh, so the order has to be right the first time:

  1. Measure the area. Length × width per section; π × radius² for circles; add all sections.
  2. Add waste. 5% for clean rectangles, 10% for curves and obstacles.
  3. Convert: ÷ 10 for rolls, ÷ pallet size (usually 450 sq ft) for pallets — confirm the pallet size with your farm.

Sod formulas

Sod needed = area × (1 + waste %)
Rolls = ceil(sod ÷ 10) · Pallets = ceil(sod ÷ pallet size)

Worked example — 50 × 20 ft lawn: 1,000 sq ft × 1.05 = 1,050 sq ft → 105 rolls = 3 pallets (450 sq ft each).

A pallet weighs roughly 1,500–3,000 lb — plan where the truck can drop it, close to the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a pallet of sod cover?

Usually 450 sq ft; 400 and 500 sq ft pallets exist regionally — confirm with your supplier.

How big is a roll of sod?

2 × 5 ft = 10 sq ft, weighing 25–50 lb depending on moisture.

How much extra should I order?

5% for rectangles, 10% for curved or obstacle-filled lawns. Border offcuts don't reuse.

How do I measure an odd-shaped lawn?

Split it into rectangles and circles, calculate each, add them, round up.

How fast must sod be installed?

Same day as delivery — the pallet heats up and the sod yellows within about 24 hours in warm weather.

What does sod cost?

$0.35–$0.85/sq ft for material ($160–$380 per 450 sq ft pallet); installed jobs run $1–$2/sq ft.
